About calc.blue

What it is

calc.blue is an iPad app for Manual J load calculations: capture a house with the LiDAR sensor on an iPad Pro, get room-by-room heating and cooling loads, size a heat pump with Manual S equipment selection, and produce reports for the permit, the installer and the homeowner. The app is not open to the public yet; contractors are let in in small groups from the waitlist.

The free calculators on this site (balance point, heat loss, quick load estimate) run in your browser, need no account and give estimates. None of them is a Manual J or Manual S calculation.

Where the data comes from

• Load procedure: ACCA Manual J 8th edition. calc.blue is not affiliated with or approved by ACCA.
• Design temperatures and typical-year hourly temperatures: ASHRAE design conditions and TMYx weather files via Climate.OneBuilding.org.
• Building physics in the free tools: ASHRAE Handbook—Fundamentals.
• Housing data: NREL ResStock (CC BY 4.0).
• Certified equipment and rebate programs: rebate.blue.

Who runs it

calc.blue is published by DotBlue LLC, a UniCo Group company. DotBlue also runs the other .blue sites listed in the footer.

The app is designed around the day-to-day work of crews at UniColorado Heating & Cooling, a Denver HVAC contractor and DotBlue's sister company. The install photos on this site are theirs.
